Hayling Island Butlin's

Billy Butlin continued to expand his camps and amusement parks as his legacy got stronger. Another area of his company was the smaller holiday parks, known as Freshfields. These locations were smaller camps with fewer options, such as reduced entertainment venues and little to no funfair.  Billy Butlin had the idea that not everyone would like the main camps and what they offer. To fill in this gap, he started Freshfields which offered a more relaxing camp that was quieter.

One of these smaller locations was in Hayling Island, called Sunshine Holiday Centre. The location used to be a small part of the land owned by the Hudson's. There was a farmhouse and some surroundings. In 1938, the start of Freshfields started until World War Two started, halting the development.  As with Billy Butlin's other locations, this one played a particular role in the war as it created accommodation for many service personnel that went from train to island.

This location, as with the others, was renamed HMS Northney and was a part of other camps on the island, for example, HMS Northney I, HMS Northney II and so forth.  These locations would help with the training of crews of landing crafts and techniques for landing troops, which became extremely important for D-Day.

After the war, the camp returned back to Freshfields would continue until the 1960s when it was purchased by Pontins. However, these were the years that competition from abroad made cheap packages, removing the appeal of the holiday camps. In the 1980s, the Warner holiday camps purchased the location and from this point, it was renamed   Mill Rythe Holiday Village

An interesting note is that the camp returned back next to Butlin's as Rank merged the Warner's with Haven, forming the Rank Holiday Division.  However, sadly, this location, like many, was not a part of the future plans for the holiday division as the declining numbers of visitors for the location, under another ownership, went into administration in 2008.

In 2010,  the camp was given another chance as a respected company, Away Resorts, purchased this amazing location. Investing £2.5 million pounds into the camp, the site would once again create new memories and would continue to offer much to many customers.

PLEASE NOTE:
Away Resorts and Butlin's have NOT approached me to do this page. They have not asked me to advertise them nor have they asked me to tell the story of their location. I have added their story to this former Butlins Freshfield camp page as they continue to keep this location going today and their involvement is an important one. A link has been added to their website with respect to say thank you for the continued story of this location. Their story can be removed from this site at any stage and all logos shown are copyrighted to them.

Who and What is Butlin's Memorabilia Website

Mark Banks owns and created this website to show his collection of Butlin's memorabilia items. It was created during my spare time at work and is a hobby of mine and has since grown into a site that offers a chance for others to smile. This website is NOT the official website for Butlin's and is NOT the official archive of Butlin's at any stage. The website has expanded to show stories, with permission from that person, of a moment in Butlin's from people who are either a customer or former staff. This website is in loving memory of all that had come to this amazing company and to Sir William Butlin, the founder.  This website also has information about research regarding Butlin's history with information obtained from the research I made, which is not official.

The Untold Stories of Butlin's

The website has expanded to now include an area called "Untold Stories of Butlin's". These stories have been added to the site by a member of my group who has shared their moment at Butlin's. These stories are not from the official company and are from the person it represent, as shown on the page. The stories shared are from that person's memory and show the magic of Butlin's on how it creates that special moment.
